Organized answers to the most common eSIM questions.
Basics
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in your device. It stores carrier profiles that can be downloaded and activated without a physical SIM card. Governed by GSMA SGP.22 standard.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for EID. Android: Settings → About Phone → EID, or dial *#06#. A 32-digit EID confirms eSIM hardware support.
Can I use eSIM and my regular SIM at the same time?
Yes, on dual-SIM devices. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts; use eSIM for local data. This is the most common traveler configuration.
How many eSIM profiles can I store?
Most devices support 5-20 stored profiles, with one active at a time. You can store plans for multiple countries and switch between them as needed.
Activation
Do I need internet to activate an eSIM?
Yes. The initial profile download requires internet access (Wi-Fi recommended). Once installed, the profile can be activated and deactivated without internet.
Can I activate eSIM before I travel?
Yes, and it's recommended. Install the profile at home over your home Wi-Fi. The plan will activate when you arrive and enable it — or when the plan's validity period begins.
What if my QR code scan fails?
Use the manual activation code (usually provided alongside the QR code). Enter it in Settings → Cellular → Add Plan → Enter Details Manually.
European Travel
Does eSIM work across all EU countries?
Regional European plans typically cover all 27 EU member states. The EU's Roam Like at Home regulation means EU-based plans work across member states at domestic rates.
Does eSIM support 5G in Europe?
Yes, if your device and plan support 5G. Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany have the most advanced 5G deployments. Set your network mode to 5G/LTE in Settings for best performance.
What about Switzerland and the UK?
Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and the UK are outside the EU. Many European eSIM plans include these countries. Always verify your specific plan's coverage list before travel.
Troubleshooting
eSIM shows no service. What to do?
1. Verify eSIM is enabled in Settings. 2. Enable Data Roaming for eSIM slot. 3. Toggle Airplane Mode. 4. Try manual network selection. 5. Restart device. 6. Contact your provider.
Will factory reset delete my eSIM?
Yes. Always check your provider's reinstallation policy before factory resetting. Save QR code screenshots as backup. Some providers allow reinstallation; others issue single-use codes.
My device is carrier-locked. Can I use eSIM?
Carrier-locked devices may only accept eSIM profiles from the locking carrier. Contact your carrier to request unlocking. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
